Interested students should discuss the OPEN Program with their high school counselor. The application forms can be emailed, mailed, or hand-delivered to the program coordinator. See instructions below.
Application deadlines are determined by semester. We accept applications starting approximately three months before the first day of the semester up until two weeks before the first day of the semester. Please check the IU Bloomington Official Academic Calendar for the appropriate semester schedule. Late applications will not be accepted due to processing requirements.
Step 1 - High School Authorization: Completed application forms must include signed authorization from a high school principal or guidance counselor for each IU Bloomington class listed on the student application. Information regarding the applicant's high school performance as well as the principal's or counselor's endorsement must appear on the application.
Step 2 - IU Bloomington Faculty Endorsement: Signature of approval must be obtained from the appropriate IU departmental chairperson, or a representative of the IU faculty member teaching the course. There may be special requirements or prerequisites recommended for specific courses.
Step 3 - Parental and Student Signatures: The application must be signed by a parent or guardian, agreeing to financial responsibility. The student must sign the application as well.
Step 4 - Application Delivery: The completed application with all signatures of approval should be sent as an attachment via email to openprgm@iu.edu. Alternatively, it may be mailed or hand-delivered to the OPEN Program coordinator at 510 N. Fess Avenue, Bloomington, IN 47408.
Final approval to take the course(s) is granted by the Division of Extended Programs.

Precollege students who wish to enroll in music courses for credit should complete the OPEN Program application as directed above. To obtain the IU Bloomington endorsement for Music courses, contact the Undergraduate Office located at Jacobs School of Music East Studio Building 120, Advising and Records Services. Feel free to phone 812-855-3743 for more information.
Children (all levels) and adults interested in non-credit programs and workshops may visit the Jacobs Pre-College Programs site for more information.
Precollege students who wish to enroll in World Language courses above an entry 100-level must have IU transcript proof of having met prerequisites or must complete an online placement exam to determine appropriate course options. Complete the OPEN Program application as directed above, and list the language of the desired course in the section requesting course information. Only High School endorsement is needed when submitting the application.
You will be contacted by the OPEN Program once you have been admitted to direct you to the online language placement exam.
IU Course Offerings are available through the Office of the Registrar. Applicants are encouraged to complete the application at least two weeks before the semester begins and will be enrolled after the freshman registration period.
OPEN Program enrollment will always be on a SPACE-AVAILABLE basis. Please notice that auditing or taking Pass/Fail classes are under no circumstances options available to OPEN Program students.
OPEN Program students will be registered as part-time students with a special nondegree classification. Enrollment does not constitute regular admission to Indiana University.
Students may view their registration status online through One.IU. Once a student is registered, it is their responsibility to pay their bursar bill.
OPEN students may not self-adjust their schedule for any reason. If it is necessary to drop, add, or change a section, contact the coordinator as soon as possible.
100-level courses are usually introductory courses, which OPEN program students can choose directly.
Upper-level courses may have prerequisites or require special permission. Check course description on iGPS to find prerequisites for specific courses.
Some departments may require students to take a placement exam, in order to determine the appropriate course level.
If the requested course is already at capacity on the date of registration and no alternate class is listed on the application, the student will be placed on the waitlist for the requested course. Students should monitor their account daily at One.IU for the first week of classes to see if their name has been added to the official class roster. The waitlist is closed at the end of the first week of class.
Courses dropped after the first week of classes will be assigned a grade of W through the automatic withdrawal period; thereafter a grade of W or F must be assigned by the instructor. After the automatic withdrawal period, we expect withdrawals only in cases of emergency (such as extended illness or equivalent distress).
Once a student is registered, it is their responsibility to notify the OPEN Program Coordinator that they have decided to withdraw from the program. Registration WILL NOT automatically be canceled for nonpayment of fees. If a student does not request a cancellation of the registration through the OPEN Program Coordinator, there is a risk of receiving a grade of F in the course(s).
A Late Schedule Change fee of $23.00 is assessed for each course dropped after the end of the 100% refund period. Find the refund period dates on IUB's Official Academic Calendar. The Late Schedule Change fee also applies to a class number change or a change of arranged hours.
