Hoosiers are able to put academic work into action with community engaged learning. Getting involved in the local or global communities through coursework, undergraduate research, internships, study abroad opportunities, and more allows IU Bloomington students to apply their skills in real-world settings.
In the classroom
Students are able to engage with local and statewide communities through courses for credit. New service-learning offerings are available every year on campus.
The following is a sampling of community engaged learning courses.
Community Service Writing
ENG-W 240
Student writers are paired with residents at Jill's House, an assisted living facility for people with dementia, on collaborative life writing and storytelling projects. For the final projects, students must write a research paper addressing dementia-friendly dimensions of community life in Bloomington
Interaction Design and Programming
INFO-I 300
Students, grouped into teams of 3-4, are paired with outside clients to build software. Groups conduct UX research, create design deliverables such website/app mockups and prototypes, interview stakeholders, and test their designs with potential users.
Resources For Counseling with Youth
EDUC-G 302
Students are provided with an orientation to the psychological needs of children and adolescents with focus on interventions, resources in schools, and other local youth-serving organizations. Additionally, students will be paired and work with youth at local schools and organizations.
